NEW GALLERY IN ORIENTAL

Three Oriental artists are opening a fine art gallery on 800 Broad Street called the Station Gallery in what used to be a Texaco gas station. The artists are Antonia Leavitt, John Hanley, and Susan Cheatham. All together we will have about 150 years of art experience. We three got together and decided what better way to promote other artists, art, and eastern North Carolina tourism in the coastal area than to start an art gallery for artists by artists especially since there are three outdoor artists who paint the coastal areas exclusively showing at the gallery.

We are also the home base of Plein Air Painters of Oriental, also two members are represented by the Coastal Pastel Society, Hanley and Cheatham. Bernie Rosage, founding member of OOPS (Onslow Outdoor Painters Society), a Jacksonville plein air artist will be showing his work, known for his peaceful rural paintings. Joining the group also is artist John Knox, an acrylic pallet painter, who lives on his boat and is known for his brilliant colors. Represented also are two abstract artists Antonia Leavitt and Greenville artist Bob Jones. Leavitt expresses herself by using fields of color and movement throughout her paintings finding unseen influences which are around us. Jones is known his teaching expertise and for his eye popping color which he incorporates with experimental found articles. He likes to work with views outside the box. 3-D public sculpture artist Gary Gresko, who just finished a project in Roanoke, Virginia, and is working on a new sculpture in Greensboro, NC., will show fountains and cement sculpture. John Hanley will show his award winning plein air oil paintings and pastels. Susan Cheatham will be showing her views of the coastal areas of marshes, farms and anything near or on the water. Molly McCormick, our gypsy, jewelry artist, is looking forward to seeing you radiate in her jewels. The Station Gallery has a full line up of talented artists with varied styles and mediums to fulfill your heART's desire.

The building is circa 1930 and used to be a garage and this winter the artists plan to get together and paint murals of the past tenants of the building on the outside walls. The gallery will be holding life classes and art classes on creativity and spirit houses. The Station Gallery is within walking distance to the town dock of Oriental.

Our Grand Opening (Nov 1., 2008) was a huge success with wine, food, live music, art, and approximately 120 people stopping by... thanks everyone!

A grand opening for The Station Gallery, Oriental’s newest art gallery takes place this Saturday, November 1 from 4-7pm. The gallery came to being thru the efforts of artists Toni Leavitt, Susan Cheatham and John Hanley, but features a number of other artists. The Station Gallery is showing a broad mix of painting styles — realism, impressionism, abstract expressionism are just a few. The Station Gallery, at 800 Broad Street in what used to be a gas station, will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. For more info call 249-0849 or 249-1188.

Molly Lutisha McCormick has been making jewelry since the friendship bracelets of elementary school. Having learned the proper techniques of beaded jewelry and wire forming, she now pushes the boundaries of her craft, striving to perfect her skills with each individual piece. The quality of her jewelry stands out due to her attention to detail, the play of color and texture, and most importantly the function and feel of the piece. Her philosophy is that jewelry should make a person radiate like the gemstones they adorn. Her inspiration comes from life experiences. Molly is a gypsy who has traveled to the far reaches of the planet and into the wilderness. Along the way she has created friends by sprinkling her gemstone creations from Arizona to North Carolina. She looks forward to seeing you radiate with her jewels.

Bernie Rosage Jr. is a native of Onslow County, North Carolina, where he resides with his wife, Tami, their children and grandchildren. Bernie’s passion for art started at an early age and continues as a self taught artist. He likes the term “self motivated to be taught” as he works hard to fuel his passion of oil painting. With an appreciation for the simple things in life he states... “Many artists thrive with creativity in times of turmoil... I'm just the opposite... give me peace and harmony and the creative juices flow much easier... That is why I love working from life and enjoying nature”. One of his favorite ways to paint is on location en plein aire... the French term literally translates in open air. He has also joined the ranks of the “painting a day” art movement bringing everyday objects to life in fresh and artistic ways. His painterly approach to color and texture adds to his unique sense of style, best defined as Impressionistic Realism. His subjects are often personal and convey feelings of peace, serenity, and nostalgia. “I am drawn to country roads, marshlands, cottages, barns, trees, open fields, flowing rivers, etc... anything that eludes to a peaceful, calming feeling when viewed,” states Rosage. His paintings are a wonderful culmination of sensitivity and skill and are collected throughout the United States, Ireland, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Plein Air Artist

Being outdoors and spending as much time as I can painting landscapes or photographing nature is my passion. My degree is in Landscape Architecture from the School of Design at NCSU in Raleigh, NC. I have been involved in designing over 500 landscape projects in the RTP area, curated the White Garden at the JC Ralston Arboretum and was a buyer and manager at Logan’s Trading Company. I have taught Environmental Education to 4-8 grade children who come to Camp Don Lee from all over the state to learn about our rivers, estuaries and the special environments we have here in the Pamlico Sound. I also might throw in a little art and anthropology along the way. I am also a landscape designer and have my own design firm.

I have been painting since I was seven years old. I was a member of the Circle 10 Art Gallery located Oriental, NC where I showed and sold my artwork. Recently, I have completed three mural projects, two were public art projects and the other one is installed in a private residence. I have two dragons I am in charge of; I hope they are sleeping now. So, I am always painting. I have joined the NC Pastel Society, Alamance County Outdoor Painters, and I am a founding member of the Coastal Pastel Society. I also was a founding member of Art on the Neuse Fine Arts Event and the Oriental Plein Air Painters. For a decade now, I have studied with Susan Sarback, who is a Plein Air painter and has her own studio and art school plus a gallery, Color and Light, in Sacramento, California. Over the years I have studied with many other artists such as Kevin Beck, Doug Dawson, Lou Wilson, Albert Handel, and Lois Giffell. I have made three sailing trips on my sailboat painting along the way going as far south as the Bahamas and up to the Chesapeake Bay. When I lived in Raleigh, I was a member of the Visual Art Gallery, a co-op for ten years. My passion is COLOR and LIGHT, my muse is connected with all elements and qualities of Further. Further I go on a journey of art, chasing Color and Light. Sometimes I chase my muse with my sailboat, the cutter, “GRACE”.

John Hanley

John Hanley
Artist

John relocated from Connecticut to Oriental, North Carolina, in 2007, after spending the better part of a 26-year career at United Technologies Corporation involved in graphics, print and television advertising, and directing photography.

His paintings, primarily oils “en plein air,” depict everyday scenes in a visually graphic style using a limited but dynamic palette. Recently he has been re-exploring pastels and discovered that the medium adapted easily to his oil painting style.

John is a graduate of the Silvermine College of Art and the University of Hartford Art School. He credits his academic training for providing an invaluable base, but “it was the guidance of painter Beth Ellis, along with years spent working in partnership with Connecticut-based designer and fellow painter Ted Bertz that expanded my understanding of design and color.” John also credits these two mentors for encouraging him to pursue painting full-time.

He is an active member of the Carolina Artist Studio Gallery, the Twin Rivers Art Association, the North Carolina Coastal Pastel Society, the Carteret County Arts Council, and the Pamlico County Plein Air Painters.

John also exhibits at the Artworks Studio and Gallery in New Bern.
